The market for test and measurement equipment and services for military and aerospace is still in the development stage. Test and Measurement equipment developed for the telecommunications field is being used in the military and aerospace field with mixed results. The equipment in the telecommunications field is mostly single mode while the majority of the military and aerospace systems are multimode. The larger economies of scale available in the commercial field makes it possible to drive prices down. Such a volume demand is not available to the military and aerospace (M&A) field. In addition, the M&A field requires field transportable, ruggedized equipment which is easy to use. The military is investing in the development of T&M equipment through SBIRs and other contract funds but much more needs to be done by the military and industry to meet the needs.
